SprachMusikHörspiele (SpeechMusicAudioplay)
Audio drama as a specific radio art (radio play or radio drama) began in the 1920s, initially played live in
front of the microphone as a „theater for the ears”, along with the invention and development of
recording technologies it was also increasingly pre-produced and saved to wire or tape.
Even in these early days not only writers but also musicians, composers and interdisciplinary artists (Walter
Ruttmann) were interested in the medium. The free, experimenting evolution of this art form was disrupted in
Germany by fascism; after the end of World War II radio became again – with some delay – a
playground for authors looking for artistic synthesis of language, music and sound (Ferdinand Kriwet, Gerhard
Rühm, Mauricio Kagel, Heiner Goebbels . . . also to mention: John Cage).

This rich and still alive tradition inspired me to create own productions, at first in cooperation with writers
(Gerd Kivelitz, Hugo Ernst Käufer, Volker Degener) working classically after literary or poetic texts, later
more and more musically, experimenting with progressive processing of speech and sound.
The label for this can be discussed (Ars Acustica, Sound Art . .), here I name it SpeechMusicAudioplay
– in the end it's always composition for me.
